Anciently named Rājagṛha, the very center of the country of Magadha, where the ancient kings established their capital. It produces abundant, auspicious, fragrant Kuśa grass of superior quality, hence taking this as its name; it is also named Kuśāgrapura (City of Superior Grass). Lofty mountains encircle it on all four sides to serve as outer ramparts; to the west it opens onto a narrow path, with plants and trees growing lush and thick, and Karṇikāra trees filling the interior, their flowers blooming resplendently in golden color in the spring sunshine. The Kalandaka Bamboo Grove is north of the mountain city gate, looking down upon its flanks; Gṛdhrakūṭa Mountain is within this mountain city, outside the royal city.
