> 旛鐸: The first character is pronounced 嬔 +䊟 fanqie. The Yunying says: “The collective term for flags and banners.” The Zishu says: “Banners and streamers. Nowadays made of five-colored interwoven fabrics, or painted with flowers, fruits, birds, and beasts, and hung up.” The Shuowen says: “旛 means pennant edge. It is formed from 㫃 with 番 as phonetic.” 嬔 is pronounced 旛 + 萬 fanqie; 䊟 is pronounced 無 + 煩 fanqie. The second character is pronounced 唐 + 洛 fanqie. Under the military laws of antiquity, the two marshals held bells: in civil matters they shook wooden bells—bronze bells with wooden clappers; in military affairs they shook metal bells—bronze bells with iron clappers. The Shuowen says: “A large bell. It is formed from 金 with 睪 as phonetic.”
