> Either broad or narrow (作廣作陿: for 陿, the fanqie is 霞甲 \[xiá\]. The Liji says: 'When broad, it tolerates villainy; when narrow, it gives rise to desires.' The Kaosheng says: '陿 means confined (櫻介 \[yài\]).' The Yupian says: 'Pressed and confined, not expansive.' The sūtra text writes it with radical 犬 as 狹, which is an error; that is rather the character for 'tame/familiar' \[狹/狎\]. It takes radical 犬 because hounds and horses are tamed, and also denotes slighting or despising, which differs greatly from the sense of the sūtra. Some write it with radical 阝 \[fù\] as 陜, which is also incorrect; that character is read 式染 \[shǎn\], the character for Shan Prefecture. The Shuowen writes it 陿, taking radical 阝 \[fù\], radical 匚 \[fāng\], and 夾 as phonetic).
