> Embryo and womb (胞胎: for the first character, the fanqie is 已交 \[bāo/qiāo\]. Ancient texts originally wrote 包, a pictographic character. The Stone Classics write it 胞, traditionally pronounced 普包 \[pāo\], which is incorrect. The Shuowen says: 'It refers to a woman conceiving a pregnancy, and the afterbirth (兒生衣) when a child is born. It takes radical 勹 \[bāo\] and radical 巳 \[sì\] inside 勹, depicting the child not yet fully formed into a character.' Kong \[Anguo\]'s commentary on the Shangshu says: 'It means to wrap around.' For the second character, the fanqie is 他來 \[tāi\]. The Shuowen says: 'A woman's pregnancy before giving birth. It takes radical 肉 \[flesh\] with 台 as phonetic').
