> Salty and alkaline (鹹鹵): The first character has the pronunciation of 咸; the second character has the pronunciation of 魯. Kong \[Anguo\]'s commentary on the Shangshu says that what moistens downward becomes salty. The Erya says that salty is bitter, the taste of the north; it is formed with the alkaline radical (鹵) and 咸 as the phonetic element. The Shuowen jiezi says that 鹵 is also salty and bitter; in the western regions it is called salty soil; it is formed with an abbreviated dot of the ancient character 西, resembling the shape of salt grains.
