斷敵（上端管反俗字也孔注尚書云斷絕說文云截也從斤㡭聲㡭音絕律本作拒非也下亭的反杜注左傳云敵猶對也當也方言云同力者謂之敵也說文云敵仇也從攴啇聲）。

> 斷敵 (The first syllable is \*duàn\* \[duan + guan fanqie\]; it is a vulgar character. Kong Anguo's commentary on the Shangshu says: "斷 (\*duàn\*) means to cut off." The Shuowen jiezi says: "It means to sever; it is formed with 'axe' (斤) and 㡭 as the phonetic component." 㡭 is pronounced \*jué\*. The Vinaya version writes 拒 (\*jù\*), which is an error. The second syllable is \*dí\* \[ting + di fanqie\]. Du Yu's commentary on the Zuo zhuan says: "敵 (\*dí\*) is like an opponent; to match." The Fangyan says: "Those of equal strength are called 敵 (\*dí\*)." The Shuowen jiezi says: "敵 (\*dí\*) means an enemy or rival; it is formed with 'strike' (攴) and 啇 as the phonetic component").
