(The first syllable is \*jīn\* \[jin + yin fanqie\]. The Shuowen jiezi says: "The strength of muscle and flesh; it is formed with 'flesh' (肉) and 'bamboo' (竹), as bamboo is a thing rich in fibers; and it is formed with 'strength' (力),力 depicting sinews." The second syllable is pronounced \*mài\*; it is the orthodox form of the character. The Shuowen jiezi writes it as \[覛-見+皿\] and says: "The blood vessels flowing and circulating within the body; it is formed with 'blood' (血) and 𠂢 as the phonetic component." 𠂢 is pronounced \*mài\* \[pu + mai fanqie\]. The Vinaya version writes 脉, which is a vulgar character).
