The Zuo zhuan says: "Do not cause great disgrace \[巨羞\]," on which Du \[Yu's\] commentary says: "Xiū means shame." The Shuowen jiezi says: "Xiū means to present in offering; it has the sheep classifier \[羊\], as sheep are what is offered; it has 丑, which is also phonetic." The second character has the fanqie \[儜簡\] nǎn. The Fangyan says: "Nǎn means ashamed." The Kaosheng says: "Shamefaced blushing." The Shuowen jiezi says: "Blushing with shame; it has the red classifier \[赤\] and 㞋 as phonetic." In the Vinaya text it is written with the skin classifier as 𧹞, which is a popular variant. The character 㞋 has the fanqie \[尼展\] niǎn.)
