> Defend against an opponent \[扞敵\]: The first character (han + an \[hàn\]) is explained in the Zuo zhuan: 'Hàn means to defend; it also means to collide.' The Kaosheng says it means to withstand. The Shuowen says it means to oppose; formed with 'hand' \[手\] as radical and yú \[于\] as phonetic. In the Vinaya text it is written with 'drought' \[旱\] as 捍, which is also acceptable; 忮 is pronounced zhì. The second character (ting + di \[dí\]) is explained in Du's commentary on the Zuo zhuan: 'Dí means counterpart/opponent.' The Fangyan says: 'Those of equal strength are called dí.' The Shuowen states: 'An enemy; an equal; formed with "tap/strike" \[攴\] as radical and dí \[啇\] as phonetic.' 啇 is pronounced dī.
