> 痃癖 (for the first character, x- + -ian in fanqie. It is a popular character; the various character books have no such character at all, nor is there an original character. Upon examination, the disease 痃 is a cold-qi illness in the abdomen; when it occurs, the vessels swell and pull tight like a bowstring, hence the popular term 'bowstring qi disease'. It takes disease as semantic and an abbreviated 絃 as phonetic. For the second character, p- + -i in fanqie. The Kaosheng says: '癖 is an illness of lumps in the abdomen.' The Shenglei says: 'Stagnant food that does not digest.' The Wenzi dianshuo gives it with disease as semantic and 辟 as phonetic).
