> Spleen and kidneys (脾腎): \[the first character is pronounced with the fanqie\] 婢 + 彌. The Baihu tong says: 'The spleen (pí) corresponds to discern (bàn); it is that by which essence is stored and qi is received; it is the quintessence of earth; its colour is yellow.' The Shuowen says: 'The wood organ.' The second character is \[pronounced with the fanqie\] 時 + 刃. The Baihu tong says: 'The kidneys (shèn) correspond to guest (bīn); by drawing off and discharging the quintessence of water, their colour is black; being yin, they are a pair, hence they form a pair.' The Shuowen says: 'Both characters take the radical 肉 (flesh); \[the second has\] 臤 as phonetic; 臤 has the sound jiān.'
