> Intransigent and perverse (籠戾: the first character has the fanqie 聾董. We note: 籠戾 means unyielding, obstinate, and difficult to tame. Looking through the character dictionaries, there is no standard base character for this \[meaning\]; the treatise borrows 籠 as a phonetic loan. In various sūtras and treatises, it is also written as 𢤱悷, both with the semantic component "mind" (心). The second character has the fanqie 犁帝; Han Ying's Commentary on the Odes says: '戾 means not good.' Zheng Xuan's Commentary on the Odes says: '戾 means excessive.' The Guangya says: 'Hasty and stubborn.' The Mao text of the Odes says: 'Violent, perverse, and without familial affection.' The Wenzidian shuo says: '戾 means a standard/perversity. It is formed from "door" (戶) and "dog" (犬); it is an associative compound.').
