> Deceiving and deluding (撟誑): The upper character has the fanqie ju + yao (jiǎo). The Jixun says: ‘Jiǎo (撟) means deceptive.’ The Zishu says: ‘Jiǎo means falsely fabricated.’ The sūtra text traditionally takes ‘arrow’ (矢) as 矯, which is not appropriate for this usage. The lower character has the fanqie ju + kuang (kuàng). Jia Kui's commentary on the Guoyu says: ‘Kuàng means to mislead.’ Du Yu's commentary on the Chunqiu says: ‘Kuàng means to deceive.’ The Kaosheng says: ‘To deceive one another with words.’ The Shuowen says: ‘It takes “speech” (言) with kuáng (狂) as phonetic.’ It is also written as 㤮 or as \[目\*狂\]; these are both ancient characters, now fallen out of use.
