> Raft (船撥): The upper character has the fanqie shu + zhuan (chuán). The Shiben states that Gonggu and Huodi made boats and ships. Song Zhong says: ‘These are the names of two ministers of the Yellow Emperor.’ The Fangyan says: ‘From west of the Pass, boats (zhōu) are called chuán.’ The Shuowen says: ‘Chuán means a boat; it takes “boat” (舟) with an abbreviated gōng (公) as phonetic.’ The lower character has the fanqie fan + wa (fá). The Kaosheng says: ‘Binding bamboo or timber to float upon the water is called bō (撥), pronounced fá.’ The Jixun says: ‘A wooden raft.’ The Shuowen says: ‘A large vessel in the ocean; it takes “wood” (木) with fā (發) as phonetic.’ It is also written as 筏, which is a popular form. The Guangya writes it as 𦪑, which is the same. The sūtra text writing it as 栰 is an erroneous form.
