> Narrow and inferior (xialie 陿劣: the upper word is \[pronounced with the fanqie\] xian + jia \[xia\]. The Liji says: 'When it is broad, wickedness can be harboured; when it is narrow, desire is brooded over.' The Kaosheng says: 'Xia 陿 means confined.' The Yupian says: 'Confined and narrow, not spacious.' In the sūtra text it is written with the dog radical 犬 as 狹, or with the mound radical 阝 and jia 夾 as 陜; both are incorrect. The standard form in the Shuowen is categorized under 阝 and bi 匕, taking jia 夾 as phonetic. It means confined and cramped. The lower word is \[pronounced with the fanqie\] li + chuo \[lie\]. The Guangya says: 'Lie 劣 means possessing little strength.' The Shuowen says: 'Lie means weak; it is an associative compound.' It is also written with the heart radical 忄 as 𭝂, which is an ancient form not used in contemporary times.).
