> "Koṇḍañña (拘鄰)" (the Xianjie jing writes Julun; the Da'ai jing writes Gulun; it is also written Julin; all are corrupt Sanskrit forms. Here it is translated as 'the first to understand the dharma of the original limit'. The Venerable 'Understanding the Original Limit' in the sūtras is this person. The Puyao jing says: "Koṇḍañña means understanding the original limit; Ājñāta means having already known, correctly rendered as understanding." Koṇḍañña is also a clan name; this is an erroneous transcription of Kaundinya. The Zhong benqi jing states: "The initial five men: the first was named Koṇḍañña; the second, Vappa; the third, Bhaddiya; the fourth, Mahānāma-Kāśyapa; and the fifth, Assaji").
