> Brave and ferocious (勇悍; the first character is pronounced with the fanqie 容踵 \[yǒng\]. Gu Yewang states: '勇 (yǒng) refers to being bold and resolute.' The Zuozhuan states: 'To be led by righteousness is called bravery.' The Zhengfa states: 'Knowing death yet not fleeing is called bravery.' The Shuowen jiezi states that it takes 'strength' \[力\] as radical and 甬 as phonetic; 甬 is pronounced 涌 \[yǒng\]. In the treatise text, writing it as 勇 is a vulgar error. The second character is pronounced with the fanqie 寒旦 \[hàn\]. The Cangjie pian states: '悍 (hàn) means fierce.' Gu Yewang states: 'Carnivores are brave and ferocious.' The Shuowen jiezi states: '悍 also means brave. It takes "heart" \[心\] as radical and 旱 as phonetic; 桀 is pronounced with the fanqie 䖍𦽆 \[qián\]').
