菀莚（上於遠反下以旃反假借字也若取字義即乖經意案菀莚地褥也即儛莚也俗呼為地衣毛錦是也經作綩蠕字體文義俱乖今不從後傳寫者冝從草之也）。

> Carpet mat \[菀莚\] (the first character is pronounced \*yu\* + \*yuan\* \[yuǎn\]; the second is pronounced \*yi\* + \*zhan\* \[yán\]. These are phonetic loans. If one takes the literal character meanings, it would run contrary to the sūtra's intent. Upon examination, \*wanyian\* means a floor rug, that is, a dancing mat; in colloquial speech it is called a "floor-covering," which is made of woolen brocade. In the sūtra it is written as 綩蠕, whose glyphic shapes and literal meanings are both contrary \[to the sense\]; this reading is not followed here. Later copyists should properly use the forms with the "grass" classifier \[艹\]).
