> Roaring and bellowing (虓吽; the first character is fanqie 嚇 + 交. The Picang says: '虓 means raging in great fury.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'The roar of a tiger. It takes 虎 as semantic classifier and 九 as phonetic.' It is also written as 唬. The second character is fanqie 呼 + 苟. The Shenglei says: '吽 means to roar.' The Kaosheng says: 'A great sounding cry.' The Wenzi dianshuo says: 'The sound of a beast. It takes 口 as semantic classifier and 牛 as phonetic.' It is also written with 句 as 𤘽, or written as 呴. Writing it in the scripture text as 哮吼 is a popular vulgar variant and incorrect).
