> Dislike and envy (嫌嫉: the first character has the fanqie \*xie\* \[h-\] + \*jian\* \[-ɛm\], \[xian\]. The Kaosheng says: "嫌 means doubt; it is malice in the heart." The Shuowen jiezi says: "Discontent in the heart; derived from 'woman' (女), with \*jian\* (兼) phonetic." In transmitted texts it is also written with 'heart' (心) as 慊, which is interchangeable. The second character is pronounced \*ji\* \[d͡ziɪt\]. Wang Yi's commentary on the Chuci says: "Harm done to the worthy is called 嫉." The Kaosheng says: "嫉 means jealousy." The Gujin zhengzi says: "Derived from 'woman' (女), with \*ji\* (疾) phonetic"; it is also written as 㑵. In the transmitted text it is written with 'illness' (疒) as 疾, which means sickness and is not the meaning of the scripture).
