> Previously broken (先折: the first character is pronounced 星 + 延 fanqie; Shuowen says: to advance forward; it is derived from the ancient character 㞢 and from 人; the second character is pronounced 章 + 熱 fanqie; Kaosheng says: 折 means to break down, to snap off; Shuowen says: the standard form is derived from double 屮 (pronounced 丑 + 列 fanqie) and 斤, explaining that double 屮 means grass, and cutting grass with an axe (斤) is called 折; Small Seal script joined the two 屮 characters, mistakenly turning them into the ancient \[屮/(艸-屮)\], and thus took shou \[手\] to form 折, pronounced with the sound of 手).
