> 鬱歭 ("Dense and halted"): The first character is pronounced with the fanqie 慍 + 欻 (yù). Zheng's commentary on the Kaogong ji states: 'Yù means not dispersing.' Guo's commentary on the Erya states: 'The dense appearance of vapour rising.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Yù means trees growing densely together; it takes the radicals 臼, 冖, 缶, and \[必/(匚@一)\] as its decoration, expressing that the blossoms of all kinds of plants from distant places are dense and lush.' The second character is pronounced with the fanqie 持 + 耳 (zhì). Gu Yewang states: 'Zhì is like hesitating and halting without advancing.' The Shuowen jiezi states: 'Zhì is like hesitating; it takes the radical 止 (stop) with 寺 as the phonetic.' Chú (hesitating) is pronounced with the fanqie 佇 + 猪 (zhù).
