> 玁狁 ("The Xianyun"): The first character is pronounced with the fanqie 杴 + 儼 (xiǎn); the second character is pronounced with the fanqie 聿 + 笋 (yǔn). The Mao Commentary on the Classic of Poetry states: 'Xianyun is the title of the northern Di.' Zheng's笺 states: 'Today they are the Xiongnu.' The Book of Han states: 'In the time of Tang and Yu \[Yao and Shun\], there were already the Xunyu and Xianyun dwelling on the northern borders.' The Gujin zhengzi states: 'Both characters Xian and Yun take the radical 犬 (dog) with 嚴 and 允 as phonetics.' Character books and the Kaosheng sometimes write it as 獫, pronounced with the fanqie 廉 + 贍 (liǎn), which is not the original character and is not adopted.
