> 褊隘 ("Narrow and cramped"): The first character is pronounced with the fanqie 鞭 + 污 (biǎn). The Guangya states: 'Biǎn is like narrow.' The Shuowen jiezi states that it takes the radical 衣 (clothing) with 扁 as the phonetic; 扁 is pronounced biàn. The second character is pronounced with the fanqie 乙 + 界 (ài). The Preface to the Classic of Poetry states: 'The land of Wei was cramped and narrow, and its people were clever and pursued profit.' Guo's commentary on the Book of Rites states: 'Narrow and base.' The Shuowen jiezi states that it takes the radical 𨸏 (mound) with 益 as the phonetic. Below it takes \[(阜-(口/十)+(耜-耒))\*?\] and 冓; \[(阜-(口/十)+(耜-耒))\*?\] is pronounced xiàng; 冓 is an ancient form of 益.
