> Palm tree (椶櫚: the first character is pronounced \*zu\* + \*hong\* \[zōng\]; the second is pronounced \*lü\* \[lǘ\]. Guo Pu's commentary on the \*Classic of Mountains and Seas\* says: 'The palm is a tree over twenty feet tall, with hanging branches and large, round leaves; its seedpods are thick and its bark heavy, which can be made into ropes and raincoats.' The \*Gujin zhengzi\* states that both characters are formed from the "wood" radical (木) with 㚇 and 閭 as their phonetics. 㚇 is pronounced \*zong\* \[zōng\]. The \*Shuowen jiezi\* also calls it 栟櫚, which is another name for the palm. In the transmitted text it is written as 葼䕡, which is a scribal error. 㚇 is pronounced \*zong\* \[zōng\]; 栟 is pronounced \*bing\* \[bīng\]).
