> Sleeping carriage (轀輬: the first character is pronounced \*wu\* + \*kun\* \[wēn\]; the second is pronounced \*lüe\* + \*chang\* \[liáng\]. The \*Records of the Grand Historian\* says: 'A \*wenliang\* carriage is a sleeping carriage; because the First Emperor of Qin died and his death was not announced, it subsequently came to be used as a hearse carriage.' Meng Kang's commentary says: 'The \*wenliang\* carriage was formerly a clothes wagon; it had windows: when closed it was warm (轀/溫), and when opened it was cool (輬/涼).' The \*Kaosheng\* says: 'A light carriage.' The \*Shuowen jiezi\* states that both characters 轀 and 輬 are formed from the "carriage" radical (車) with 昷 and 京 also serving as phonetics. 昷 has the same sound).
