> Pus and blood (膿血: the first character is pronounced \*nu\* + \*dong\* \[nóng\]. Dictionaries correctly write it with the 'blood' radical as \[盥-水+囟\]. The \*Shuowen jiezi\* says: '\[盥-水+囟\] means blood from an ulcer; it is formed from the "blood" radical (血) with the phonetic 䢉 abbreviated.' The \*Kaosheng\* says: 'The pus (\[盥-水+囟\]) of pus and blood.' Wei Hong wrote it as 膿 and also as \[序-予+(((盥-皿)-水+(向-口+乂))/辰)\], both being interchangeable. The transmitted text writes it as 膿, which is the popular character).
