> \[Deer/grain/er\]-millet (the upper character is pronounced with the fanqie 靡碑 \[m- + -ie = mie\]. The Kaosheng says: "\[Deer/grain/er\] is panicled millet." The Shuowen jiezi says: "It is composed of 𮮑, with 麋 abbreviated as phonetic." Contemporary popular usage sometimes writes it with 禾 or with 麻, both of which are incorrect. Character dictionaries say: "It is a kind of broomcorn millet; it resembles broomcorn millet but is not sticky." Some call it panicled millet; it comes in white, yellow, red, and black varieties, all of which can be cooked as grain).
