> 閹竪 Palace eunuchs (the first character is pronounced \[in fanqie\] 奄 + 炎; the second is pronounced \[in fanqie\] 殊 + 主; Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli says: "An 閹 is one whose seminal essence is locked away; today they are called palace men." The Shuowen says: "豎 means a palace gatekeeper or door-closer; formed with 'gate' (門) as semantic and 奄 as phonetic; 豎 is formed with 臤 and 豆 as phonetic;" the preface writes it with the popular character 竪).
