The Kaosheng says: "The lěi is what is nowadays the plow handle; the curved wood above the plowshare. Formed from 丰 and 木." 丰 is pronounced jiè. 耜 is pronounced sì. The Kaosheng says: "It is like modern spade shovels with a handle and curved blade, resembling a plowshare, used in paddy fields." The Shuowen jiezi says: "耜 is formed from 耒 with \[耜-耒\]. \[耜-耒\] is the ancient character for 以; the upper opening does not close, so it is this." It is also written in three forms: 㭒 and 鈻.)
