Gritty and stained: the first character is pronounced with the fanqie 初 + 錦; the second is pronounced 獨 (dú). Lu Ji's Eulogy of the Meritorious Officials of Han Gaozu has: 'Vast and boundless was the universe, gritty above and stained below; waves jolted the four seas, dust flew over the Five Peaks; the nine provinces hesitated, and the three luminaries altered their divinations.' The Gujin zhengzi states it takes the stone radical (石) and 參 for phonetic, or takes the earth radical (土) as 墋.
