> Demonic slander (for the first \[character 祅\], y- + \[j\]iao \[yāo\]; the Kaosheng says: “Earthly anomalies; ghosts and spectres.” It is also written following 言 as 訞. The Shuowen says: “It follows 示 with 芺 as phonetic.” 芺 has the same sound as above. In the transmission it is written following 女 as 妖, which is interchangeable. For the second \[character 誣\], pronounced wu \[wū\]; Du's commentary to the Zuo commentary says: “'Wu' means deception.” Zheng's commentary to the Book of Rites says: “Delusion; adding slander.” The Shuowen says: “Adding false words; it follows 言 (speech) with 巫 as phonetic.” Both are phono-semantic characters).
