> 矛楯 \[máodùn\] (The first character has the fanqie jia + hou. Zheng's commentary on the Shijing says: 'A lance weapon.' The Kaogong ji says: 'A standard spear \[qiúmáo\] is four chǐ long.' The Shuowen says: 'A spear twenty chǐ long, mounted on a war chariot; a pictographic character.' In ancient script it was written with the radical 金 as 𨥨, or with the radical 戈 as 𢦵. In the biography it is written with 牟 as 鉾, with identical sound and gloss, being a vulgar character. The second character has the fanqie chun + zhun. Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli says: 'A shield \[dùn\] is what serves as an enclosure and protection.' Note: A dùn is what is now called a shield-board. The Shuowen says: 'A dùn is a shield \[dài\], used to protect the body and shield the eyes; a pictographic character.' The character 𤟢 has the sound dài).
