> Embers and ashes (for the first \[character 煨\], w- + \[h\]ui \[wēi\]; the Guangya says: “'Wei' is like smouldering fire.” The Shuowen says: “'Wei' is fire within a basin. It follows 火 (fire) and has 畏 as its phonetic.” For the second \[character 燼\], c- + \[j\]in \[jìn\]; this is a vulgar character; the standard form follows 火 (fire) as 燼. The Fangyan says: “'Jin' is like leftover fire.” Du's commentary to the Zuo commentary says: “'Jin' is wood remaining after being burned by fire.” Therefore, the Imperial Commentary to the Classic of Filial Piety Preface says: “How much more so when destroyed under Qin, what was obtained was all the remnants of embers and ashes.” The Shuowen gives it following 火 (fire) as 燼, with an abbreviated 盡 as phonetic).
