> 鍼盲 (The first character has the fanqie phonetic spelling 執 \[zhí\] + 任 \[rèn\], \[zhēn\]. The Guangya says: "'Zhēn' means to pierce." Examining 'zhēnmáng' \[needling the blind\]: it refers to using the correct Dharma to cure erroneous views, just as needling the chronic affliction of blindness. The Shuowen says: "It takes 金 \[metal\] as its radical and 咸 as its phonetic component." Nowadays it is commonly written with 十 as 針, which is a vulgar character. The second character has the fanqie phonetic spelling 麥 \[mài\] + 庚 \[gēng\], \[máng\]. The Shuowen says: "An eye without a pupil. It takes 目 \[eye\] as its radical and 亡 as its phonetic component").
