> 冕瑬 \[crown tassels\]: The first character is pronounced miǎn. Zheng \[Xuan\]'s commentary on the Zhouli says: 'The six types of ceremonial vestments all share the name miǎn; this is a head ornament, an honorable one.' He also says: 'Miǎn is the covering over the extended top.' The Shiben says: 'The Yellow Emperor created the ceremonial crown.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'It is composed of yuè (曰, read with the sound mào, cap) and the sound miǎn (免).' The second character is pronounced liú. Mao's commentary on the Shijing says: '\[Hang...\] is a head ornament of the honorable, hanging pearls down to obscure the eyes.' The Shuowen jiezi says it is composed of the \[semantic\] radical 'jade' (玉) and the sound liú (流); it is a phono-semantic character.
