> 斑駁 ('mottled and dappled': the first character has the fanqie 八蠻 \[bā + mán\]. The Zitong also writes it with 辡 as 辬, having the same meaning as 斑, stating: '斑駁 means variegated in pattern'; it also says: 'The appearance of markings.' 辡 is pronounced 弁. In the transmission text it is written with 刀 as 班, which is a vulgar character. The second character has the fanqie 邦邈 \[bāng + miǎo\]. The Hanshu says: 'A mixed blend of black and white is called 駁.' The Shuowen says: 'A horse of impure color. It is derived from 馬 (horse) with 爻 as phonetic.' In the transmission text it is written with 交 as 駮, which is a vulgar character).
