The Zhuangzi says: 'When one catches the fish, one forgets the fish-trap; when one catches the hare, one forgets the snare.' Gu Yewang says: 'The quan is a bamboo basket for catching fish; the ti is a device for catching hares.' The Gujin zhengzi says quan (筌) takes 竹 ('bamboo') as semantic and 全 as phonetic; ti (蹄) takes 足 ('foot') as semantic and 帝 as phonetic; it is also written as 蹏.
