Investigation and discernment (Fanqie: 𦙃 \[s-\] + 吏 \[-i\]. In Sanskrit, vitarka translates as 'investigation' \[xun\], and vicāra translates as 'discernment' \[ci\]. Xun means seeking out, ci means examining. It is either volition or wisdom searching into an object: the coarse state is called xun; these very same two factors thoroughly examining the object in a subtle state is called ci, hence the term 'investigation and discernment'. The old names 'sensory thought and contemplation' \[jueguan\] were due to translators not examining the original language—in the Sanskrit text, bodhi is jue, and vipaśyanā is guan—which led to this error).
