> Sowing and reaping (稼穡) (The first \[character\] has the fanqie jiā + xià \[jià\]. The second has the fanqie suǒ + cè \[sè\]. Ma \[Rong\]'s commentary on the Analects states: 'Planting the five grains is called jià.' Zheng \[Xuan\]'s commentary on the Rites of Zhou states: 'Jià is similar to marrying off a daughter (jià), generating one from another.' The commentary on the Mao Shijing states: 'Planting is called jià; gathering in is called sè.' The Shuowen states: 'Jià refers to the heading and ripening of grain. Another view says: growing in the field is called jià; when the grain can be harvested, it is called sè.' Both characters derive from grain (禾); jiā (家) and sè (嗇) are both phonetics. 嗇 has the same pronunciation as above).
