> Pincers and tongs (鉆鋷: the first character has the fanqie 儉嚴 \[qiān\]. The Shuowen says: "Iron tongs used to grip and take things." It is formed from 金 (metal) with 占 as the phonetic component. In the sūtra text it is written with 苷 as 鉗, which refers to a child's iron cangue; it does not have the meaning of gripping and taking. The second character has the fanqie 黏輙 \[niè\]. The Shuowen says that 鋷 is also a pincher (鉆) or grasper (攝). It is formed from 金 (metal) with 取 as the phonetic component. 取 has the same pronunciation as above. In the sūtra text it is written with three 耳 (ears) as 鑷, an iron fitting under a carriage; it is not the original character).
