> Orphaned and desolate (孤惸: the first character has the fanqie 古胡 \[gū\]. The Kaosheng says: "Solitary." The Shuowen says: "One without a father is called an orphan (孤)." It is formed from 子 (child; pronounced 結 \[jié\]) with an abbreviated 觚 as the phonetic component. The second character has the fanqie 葵營 \[qióng\]. The Kaosheng says: "Solitary and alone." The Wenzi dianshuo says: "One without brothers is called 惸." The Shuowen writes it as 煢, formed from 卂 with an abbreviated 營 as phonetic. It is also written with 人 as 煢, or as \[勞-力+儿\]; all are used interchangeably).
