> Source and branch (源派: the first character is pronounced with the fanqie 愚袁 \[ng- + -iuɐn = yuán\]. The Shuowen jiezi says: 'A water spring is called a source (源).' A dictionary says: 'The origin of a stream.' The Hanshu says: 'Zhang Qian was sent as an envoy to the Western Regions to trace the source of the Yellow River; its mountains had many jades and stones, but he did not see Mount Kunlun.' The Western Regions Account says: 'The Yellow River has two sources: one emerges from the Congling Mountains, and one emerges from Khotan.' The second character is pronounced with the fanqie 疋封 \[p- + -ioŋ = pài\]. The Kaosheng says: 'Divided currents.' The Shuowen jiezi says: 'A divergent stream is written 𠂢.' Written as 派 is a non-standard popular character).
