> Exhausting the jade lectures (殫玉講: the first character is \[pronounced with the fanqie\] dang + an; Kong's commentary to the Shangshu says that dan means "to exhaust"; the Shuowen gives the same gloss, formed from evil/bare-bone \[歺\] with dan as phonetic; examining the original biography, it says: "fathoming the golden words and exhausting the jade tablets \[玉牒\]"; some write it with the character die \[牒, tablet\]; in the Poxie lun, Venerable Lin's memorial agrees with this and also writes the character die \[牒\], which means white birch-bark and Sanskrit pothi sūtras and treatises; now this separate biography writes "jade lectures" \[玉講\], whose meaning is not yet clear).
