(The first character is pronounced with the fanqie \*y-\*, \[yuan\], from 遠 and 元. The commentary to the \*Mao Shi\* states: '垣 is also a wall (牆).' The second character is pronounced with the fanqie \*q-\*, \[qiang\], from 匠 and 羊. The \*Shenglei\* states: '牆 is also a low wall (垣).' The \*Shangshu\* states: 'None dare scale the walls and ramparts.' The \*Shuowen\* states: '垣牆 means an enclosure; it takes 嗇 as semantic and 爿 as phonetic'; 爿 has the same sound as above. Sūtra texts sometimes write it in four forms: 牆, \[序-予+(夾/回)\], 𡓜, and 牆; these are all non-standard characters used colloquially and are incorrect.)
