(The first character is pronounced with the fanqie \*ch-\*, \[chuan\], from 述 and 緣. The \*Fangyan\* states: 'From the Pass westward, a boat is called a 船.' The \*Shuowen\* states: '船 means a boat; it takes 舟 \[boat\] as semantic and an abbreviated form of 沿 as phonetic.' The second character is pronounced with the fanqie \*f-\*, \[fa\], from 煩 and 韈. The \*Kaosheng\* states: 'Binding bamboo or wood to float on water.' The \*Jixun\* states: 'A wooden raft (橃); it takes 木 as semantic and 發 as phonetic.' Colloquially it is written with 竹 as 筏, which is universally used. The \*Guangya\* writes 𦪑, which is the ancient character. Sūtra texts write 栰, an erroneous form.)
