> White crane (白鶴: pronounced 何 + 各; Guo Pu's commentary to Shanhai jing says, “White in color with a long beak, living up to a thousand years, with vermilion on the crown and back.” The character dictionary says, “A divine immortal bird; its appearance is an auspicious omen.” Baopuzi says, “The crane cries in the nine marshes, its sound heard in heaven.” Huainanzi says, “The rooster knows the coming of dawn; the crane knows midnight.” Shuowen says, “It takes 鳥 with 寉 for phonetic; 寉 has the fanqie 何 + 各. Another explanation is that 寉 takes 冖, pronounced 癸 + 營, and takes 隹; 隹 is a bird; when a bird flies high and is about to emerge from 冖, it is an ideogram”).
