The Shuowen jiezi says: "Composed of a rat inside a hole, hence to flee." As for the second character, fu (伏), according to the Shuowen jiezi it is formed from dog \[犬\] and human \[人\], saying that when a dog sees a human, it prostrates \[伏\]").
