> Ditches and pits (溝阬: the first character has the fanqie 苟侯 \[gou + hou / gōu\]. The Kaogongji says: "Between well-fields, a channel four feet wide and four feet deep is called a ditch." Zheng's commentary on the Zhouli says: "The fields of ten men and two neighboring hamlets, by which \[water\] drains into streams." The Shuowen says: "A water ditch; formed from 水 \[water\] with 冓 as the phonetic component." The second character has the fanqie 客庚 \[ke + geng / kēng\]. The Erya says: "'阬' means a void." The Cangjie pian says: "'阬' means a ravine, a hollow, a moat." In the Gujin zhengzi, it is formed with 阜 as the radical and 亢 as the phonetic component. In scripture texts it is written as 坑, which is a vulgar character.)
