> Zither and flute (zhengdi 箏笛: the first character has the fanqie \[reading\] ze + jing \[zheng\]. The Shuowen \[jiezi\] says: "A stringed musical instrument with strings plucked and a body like a zhu." Originally it was the great se zither with twenty-seven strings; the men of Qin were unrighteous, and when two sons fought over their father's se, each obtained thirteen strings, so it was named zheng (dispute). The second character has the fanqie \[reading\] tu + li \[di\]. The Shuowen \[jiezi\] says: "A flute has seven holes; it is commonly called the Qiang flute." The Fengsu tong\[yi\] says: "笛 (di) means 滌 (to cleanse), meaning to cleanse away evil and impurity and usher in proper qi").
